Kizer Muskrat Featured

Written by

The growing trend of small, pocket-friendly fixed blades is one I’m absolutely thrilled about, and the Kizer Muskrat is another standout addition to this category. As someone who appreciates the practicality of smaller blades for everyday tasks, I can confidently say the Muskrat hits that sweet spot between function and portability.

Ergonomics and Comfort
Ergonomics vary greatly across knives, but the Muskrat excels in this area. Despite its small size, the handle design feels like it was made to melt into your hand. The deep finger choil and the extended jimping along the spine provide exceptional grip and control, making the blade feel like an extension of your hand. The Micarta handle, with its unique argyle pattern, enhances this comfort, sitting perfectly in the palm and offering a secure grip. From a comfort and usability standpoint, the Muskrat is spot on—it’s a joy to use for extended periods.

Blade Performance
Though compact, the 3.15-inch clip point blade punches above its weight. It’s perfectly sized for EDC tasks while also proving itself capable of small camp chores. The robust grind offers surprising durability for such a small blade, yet it doesn’t compromise on cutting performance. The blade's shape ensures precision, with a reinforced tip that handles intricate cuts with ease. This is a blade designed to tackle a variety of tasks without hesitation.

Sheath and Carry Options
The Kydex sheath features Kizer’s classic thumb swoop for easy blade retrieval, offering good retention but lacking the reassuring snap that some Kydex sheaths provide. The belt clip design, while unique, has its drawbacks. It’s more like a pocket clip for your belt, which makes attaching it simple but removing it a hassle unless you unloop your belt. Additionally, there’s a bit of back-and-forth play in the clip, which can cause the knife to shift position. On the plus side, this movement prevents the knife from digging into your side, offering comfort during active use. I plan to swap the clip for an UltiClip, which would make it more versatile and EDC-friendly.

Final Thoughts
The Kizer Muskrat is a compact, dependable fixed blade that’s built for a variety of tasks. Its ergonomic design, capable blade, and versatility make it a fantastic option for both EDC and outdoor use. While the sheath’s belt clip could use some improvement, it’s a minor gripe for what is otherwise an outstanding knife. Whether you're tackling everyday tasks or taking it on a camping trip, the Muskrat is more than ready to get the job done.
