The Right Tool For The Job

Written by

Whenever possible the right tool (usually a dedicated tool) is preferable to using a multitool, but what about the type of situation where a multitool is the right tool?

Yesterday I decided to replace the foam pads on my kayak J racks since the old ones were getting pretty rotted. I purchased new pool noodles as they are easily modified to fit the racks and got to work.

The old pads, also pool noodles were so decrepit that they fell apart in my hands and were easily pulled off for the most part, however the silicon stretch tape I used when installing the last set of pads proved a bit more resistant, so out came the Multitool.org Million Post Leatherman Surge, which of course cut through the silicone in no time.Kayak J Racks

This will come as no surprise, but it took absolutely no effort for the blade to cut through the noodles, both to section them and to split them open so that they could fit over the bars. I secured them with zip ties, which I then cut off using the wire cutters.

Did I need the Surge? No, probably not, as a much smaller multitool would have done it all easily, but the fact is that a multitool was the right tool in this situation- after all, it handled what needed to be done without requiring additional tools, and it wouldn’t have been outclassed by the individual tools necessary to do the job, ie a utility knife and side cutters.

Plus of course the Surge had a great number of other functions that were there to handle any additional tasks that may have cropped up, but then, so was my tool bag a mere 25 feet away!
